Visitors!

KAT SAYS

Last weekend and also Easter weekend, we had visitors -- Sarah and Silvan popped in and stayed with us in our latest "temporary accommodation" -- with an astonishing ocean view. Their visit was a reason for some further exploration of local restaurants and bars. We went to the Indian Sunset restaurant and also The Provincial wine bar.

During the Easter break, we didn't do much and Rob managed to squeeze in two (three) kitesurfing sessions in Coronation beach and The Moore Point Lighthouse -- he's now very happy boy.

I've started to teach Pilates and so far, I've been getting very positive feedback. I'm starting to run my regular Pilates classes in a local Medical/Health Centre. In addition, I've also started leading one walking group that is targeting people lacking any movement.

In the meantime, I've also started to work on my logo and website for marketing consultancy for local businesses. It's been a full-on week, In particular, dealing with 28 designers and revising/commenting on 175+ designs got a little bit overwhelming. However, the contests will go for another two more days and I'm now dealing with six designers only to polish their final submissions. I promise to show you the final design in my next blog.

What else is new? Next week, on Wednesday April 3rd, we're finally moving into our new house - 3bdr + study, theatre room, 2 bathrooms, double garage, backyard and also MASSIVE shed. The only thing that's missing is an ocean view. However, the house is located about 2 mins away (walking distance) from the beach where we can (according to the locals) catch lobsters so, it's not bad.

Kalbarri National Park

KAT SAYS:

Another week has gone and we've finally found out about our new house. Deal is done! And this finally means the end for living from a suitcase! We're moving in hopefully at the end of the month.
And here it is!

Last weekend, we decided to drive to Kalbarri -- a coastal town in the Mid West region located 592 km north of Perth. The driving was so easy as we hardly had any traffic on the way.

The main activity on Saturday evening was a silhouette photo-shoot during the sunset and fishing ... and we (Rob) caught THREE fish.

On Sunday, we've drove back to Geraldton via the Kalbarri National ParkThe major geographical features of the park includes the Murchison River Gorge which runs for nearly 80 kilometres on the lower reaches of the Murchison River. Spectacular coastal cliffs are located on the coast near the mouth of the Murchison River and the town of Kalbarri.

ROB SAYS:

A relief to finally get the house thing resolved.  Can't wait to get moved in and find out what's happened to all our stuff.

Don't expect to see anything on Street View -- when the Googlecar passed here it was only a blank lot!

When I moved to Australia 22 years ago, everyone thought I was moving to the end of the earth.  Yet, Sydney with its population of 5+ million is hardly what you would call "out there".

The most recent move is a bit different.

Our new suburb is Drummond Cove, the northernmost "suburb" of Geraldton, and our street, Wavecrest Circle, is amongst the northernmost part of Drummonds. After that, the next settlement is Kalbarri, 160 km away. This time we really ARE at the end of the earth.

Perth holds the distinction of being the world's most isolated city. The nearest city to Perth is Adelaide, at about 1500km away. Geraldton is 450km north of Perth and the only population centre north of Geraldton is Exmouth about 10 hours drive to the north, with a couple of thousand people. After that it's mostly just ocean and a bit of Indonesia until you reach Singapore.

In Drummonds, theres no traffic, no noise, no rubbish trucks, no drunks--yet it's only a 10 minute drive from Geraldton and virtually anything you could want from cinemas, cafes, bottle shops; even a JayCar shop, Target, Coles, Woolworths, IGA -- anything you'd want!

So, here we are, GERALDTON. Bring on the next adventure!

Finally! Lobsters! :-)

KAT SAYS:

Week number four brought a bit of positive news for us re our household goods from Sydney.

Delivery of our goods is nearly three weeks late now, and still, unfortunately, even with the first portion arriving, more then 2/3 or our "keep forward" items including the so-called "Priority Box" of urgently needed items weren't found -- which left us speechless. It was really hard to comprehend any reasoning behind this outcome. What's going on Allied -- is there anyone there who cares?

Last week brought a small breakthrough in Rob's work days -- for the first time he managed to escape the office before dark to have a couple of half-hour kiting sessions after work! He said that the local wind is 100% better than the wind in Sydney. Unfortunately, it looks like, the summer kiting will be possible only for another few weeks and then Rob has to dust off his surf boards.

Just to clarify this pic, Rob is not kiting and he's the one on the beach trying
to communicate with two kiters that he'd like to borrow their pump. :-)

I've been frantically looking for a house and it looks like we might have found what we've been looking for. Fingers crossed. BTW it's quite an experience looking for a house here. VERY low vacancy rate and very poor service from most real estate agents. Luckily, we did find one (from a referral in Rob's office) who has been really helpful and taking us to properties not yet listed. Last Friday after we finished a house inspection we're asked by the landlord if we want some lobsters. Of course, we said "yes", in particular because these were freshly caught, already cooked and FREE of charge!!!

So far, we eaten two of these gorgeous creatures --and they were delicious!

Last Friday, I also secured some work in local Health/Wellbeing centre where I'll be teaching Pilates at the end of month. I'm not certain about the hours and it might be around four to six hours per week. I can't wait to get back to regular Pilates teaching again.

We're really looking forward to next week as we're going to find out if the selected house will be ours .....

Sunset around here blows my mind -- it's so beautiful.

ROB SAYS:

Whew. Work is full-on, but interesting. Already doing several 12 hours days a week but it's quite enjoyable. Great people and loads of challenging but satisfying projects.  About to roll out a Public WiFi along the foreshore; Launching a trial of a new Unified Communications systems throughout the Council; ramping up training in our Digital Hubs for Enterprise customers; organising a sister city visit to China for the Mayor and Councillors; a whole day with the Dept of State Development rep from Mumbai; building relationships with the head of Durak University and satellite reps from Combined Universities branches; managing debate on deregulated trading hours (yes, trading hours are still regulated here...) assisting new digital enterprises in town to get off the ground; trying to work out the logic of the NBN rollout plan; about to lose my temper with the inability to access the internet reliably when I'm not in the office (despite less than 1.5 km proximity to the Telstra tower and exchange); amongst a gazillion other things.

But with all that, still managing to catch the odd glimpse of sunshine and sunset at the end of the day and even managed to get a kite in one day after work at Back Beach, after flagging someone down from the water to borrow a pump. (My pump is in the "Critical Items" box that has still not arrived from Sydney.

A word of advice -- Steer clear of Allied Pickfords on your next more. Big promises and friendly people, but they've not kept a single promise of their original sales pitch. Our "Keep Forward" goods were all supposed to have been delivered by 17 Feb -- and we're still waiting for them to locate 2/3 of them, including clothing, office items like my computer, kite pump, and most of my surfboards, amongst many others.

Enough for now. Fingers crossed we get the house organised soon and Allied finds our goods soon!

Youngy comes to Gero

The past week has gone very quickly--and brought some challenges. Dealing with local Real Estate Agents who are completely ignoring their potential clients; waiting for our stuff from Sydney (a week and  half overdue now) and also re-occurring slow Internet connections, which makes us feel like we're back in the Stone Age. (Thank you Telstra. (NOT!))

All last week, Rob was working ridiculous hours (10 - 12 per day). He's been going literally from meeting to meeting while dealing with all local matters from the extension of business trading hours, to seeking new business enterprises which could potentially raise Gero's profile. A good thing is that Rob loves his job and also his new toy (iPad 4) if he just had a bit more time to do the actual work.

The New iPad!                                                                                      Sunset session at Point Moore.

I'm getting on with my client's work and also finding some local marketing and Pilates work. I've also managed to discover some possible short term photography projects so, it might all work out quite well. However, we still need to find out new home.

This sculpture is a perfect, highly-polished sphere, sitting on a fountain that bubbles water up from underneath. The water pressure from below forces one side of the sphere to rise, causing the sphere to rotate on its base. The origin of the water shifts from side to side, causing the sphere to rotate in the opposite direction! VERY cool!

This is a replica of the boat that the mutineers of the Batavia rowed/sailed from Geraldton to Indonesia! A couple thousand kilometres!

We had very social weekend which brought us our first visitor, Ian Young -- long time friend of Rob and also the first kitesurfer in Australia.

On Sunday, we got involved in a local community project 'Clean Up Australia Day' which was coordinated by Rob's colleagues from City of Greater Geraldton. It was a great opportunity for us to meet some locals including the Scuba Diving group. Rob and I collected FOUR huge bags of rubbish from the rocks along foreshore. Can't believe how much crap people throw on the ground and in the water! Plastic bottles, plastic bags, Maccas' bags and cups, straws, cigarette butts-- even 10 shopping carts raised from the bottom by divers. You name it, we found it!
